Dating back to the late 1960s, The Ellison Inn & Lounge began as a classic roadside motel and has since been reimagined into a boutique stay — a time capsule of 1970s charm, refreshed with modern touches. “We felt a deep responsibility to honor that history while breathing new life into the property,” Rochelle Hasselbach says. Since purchasing the inn in 2021, she and her husband, Gerald Hasselbach, along with their son James, have thoughtfully renovated and preserved the space, transforming it into what she describes as “a place to stay comfortably while stepping back in time, blending nostalgia with modern comfort.”
That sense of intention carries through every detail. The owners take a fully hands-on approach, handling maintenance, housekeeping, and design themselves. They’ve created an experience that feels deeply personal. Much of the furniture was sourced from antique shops across Wisconsin, like antique credenzas, which are layered with original features, such as wood paneling and vintage tile.
A few rooms have been intentionally preserved in their earlier style to honor couples who honeymooned at the inn and have continued to make return visits over the decades. “I was not going to take that away from them,” Rochelle says, referring to the generations of guests who formed memories there. The result is a stay that feels, in her words, “Cozy. Thoughtful. Relaxed. Timeless. Our guests are often people who appreciate design, authenticity, and meaningful travel experiences. They might be couples on a quiet getaway, creatives seeking inspiration, families making new traditions, or friends gathering to celebrate life’s moments. Many are also drawn to the warmth of staying somewhere that is family-owned and genuinely welcoming.”
The inn reflects the spirit of Ellison Bay itself — connected to nature, grounded in community, and shaped by the seasons. Summer brings energy and activity, while winter offers a quieter retreat; and many guests return to experience each shift. In the warmer months, the property hosts wedding receptions, furthering its role as a gathering place. In May of 2026, its attached restaurant, the White Pine, will open as a Nordic-style supper club.

More than just a place to stay, the inn is designed to leave a lasting impression. “We hope guests leave feeling rested, inspired, and connected,” she adds, drawn back again and again to a place that feels both familiar and new.
Breakfast in Ellison Bay finds its rhythm at Blue Bear, where mornings unfold with a mix of comfort and creativity. The breakfast burrito made with fresh, local ingredients is a standout, packed with flavor and perfectly balanced, while the corned beef hash offers a rich, savory take on a classic — crisped just right and deeply satisfying. The lattes are a highlight in their own right, thoughtfully crafted and easily some of the best in the area. Beyond those staples, the menu leans into both sweet and savory options, from fluffy lemon pancakes and fresh-baked pastries to hearty egg dishes that feel both familiar and elevated. It’s the kind of place where you can linger over coffee, ease into the day, and leave feeling like you’ve experienced something distinctly local.
In the evening, you might find yourself looking for an approachable yet elevated dining experience, which Lure in Sister Bay captures with ease. Bringing a seafood-inspired menu to the heart of the area, the clam chowder is a must-order. Creamy, flavorful, and layered without being overly heavy, it sets the tone for a menu that highlights fresh ingredients and coastal influence. Alongside fish-focused entrées and seasonal small plates, dishes like sushi rolls and a bright, refreshing Thai noodle salad add an unexpected, but very welcome, variety. The space itself strikes a balance between polished and relaxed, making it just as suited for a casual evening as it is for a more intentional night out. Altogether, Lure reflects the evolving dining scene in northern Door County — creative, approachable, and grounded in both place and flavor.
